Alfabetismo funcional en odontología de padres o tutores y su relación con el estado de salud bucal de los preescolares

Resumen
Objetivo: Evaluar el nivel de alfabetismo funcional en odontología de padres o tutores y relacionarlo con el estado de salud bucal en preescolares. Metodología: Estudio transversal en el que se aplicó un instrumento validado SOHLS (Spanish Oral Health Literacy Scale) que midió el Alfabetismo Funcional en Odontología mediante encuestas aplicadas a padres, madres o tutores de 150 niños/as en edad preescolar, provenientes de guarderías del norte, centro y sur de la Ciudad de Quito. Se entregó a los padres el consentimiento informado para que los que deseen participar de manera voluntaria lo firmen, posteriormente se evaluó en los niños nivel de higiene bucal mediante el Índice de Higiene Oral Simplificado y caries dental mediante los criterios de la OMS. Se evaluaron los resultados y se determinó la relación que existe entre el nivel de alfabetismo de los padres o tutores y el estado bucal de los preescolares. Resultados: Del total de 150 preescolares y sus respectivos representantes, se determinó que 82.7% fueron madres, 63.3% mayores de 30 años y 43.3% tienen estudios superiores. Se encontró asociación entre el nivel de Alfabetismo Funcional en Odontología de padres o tutores con el nivel de escolaridad, ingreso económico mensual, parentesco, presencia de caries y biofilm dental (p=<0.05). El modelo de regresión logística mostró que los sujetos que viven en el centro-sur de la ciudad y los que tienen un bajo nivel de escolaridad presentan mayor riesgo de tener un bajo nivel de Alfabetismo Funcional en Odontología (RM=2.14;IC=95% 0.9-4.6); (RM=1.57; IC=95% 1.0-2.2) respectivamente y el padre disminuye 63% (RM=0.37;IC=95% 0.1-0.9) el riesgo de tener un bajo nivel de Alfabetismo Funcional en Odontología. Conclusiones: La presencia de problemas bucales en preescolares (caries dental y nivel de higiene bucal) se asocia con el nivel de Alfabetismo Funcional en Odontología de padres o tutores.
