Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the level of functional literacy in odontology of parents or guardians and relate it to the state of oral health in preschoolers. Methodology: A cross-sectional study using a validated instrument SOHLS (Spanish Oral Health Literacy Scale) that measured the Functional Literacy in Odontology through surveys applied to parents of 150 preschool children from nurseries from North, Center and South of the City of Quito. The informed consent was given to parents or guardians to be signed by those who voluntarily wished to participate; then the level of oral hygiene was evaluated in the children by the Index of Simplified Oral Hygiene and dental caries according to the criteria of the World Organization Of the health. The results were evaluated and the relationship between the level of literacy of the parents or guardians and the oral state of the preschoolers was determined. Results: Out of the total sample, 150 preschoolers and their respective representatives, 82.7% were mothers, 63.3% were over 30 years old and 43.3% had higher education. It was found a relationship between the level of functional literacy in odontology of parents or guardians and the study level, monthly income, relationship and presence of dental biofilm (p = <0.05). the model of logistic regression showed that the subject that live in the center-south of the city and those who have less studies have a higher risk of having low functional literacy (RM=2.14;IC=95% 0.9-4.6); (RM=1.57; IC=95% 1.0-2.2) respectively, and the father decreases 63% (RM=0.37;IC=95% 0.1-0.9). Conclusions: The oral problems in preschoolers (dental caries and level of oral hygiene) is associated with the level of Functional Literacy in Parents or guardians.
